On 9 June 2022, Mrs. Ureerat Chareontoh, Director-General of Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), met with Dr. Asa Torkelsson, Representative for UNFPA Malaysia and Country Director for UNFPA Thailand. Mr. Cheevindh Nathalang, Deputy Director-General, was also present at the meeting.

UNFPA commended Thailand’s leading role in promoting and supporting development cooperation through South-South and triangular cooperation. Over the past years, TICA and UNFPA have implemented successful projects in public health sector, some of which have been selected as best practices for South-South and triangular cooperation towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Both sides discussed opportunities for future cooperation under the South-South and triangular framework, 3rd pillar of ACMECS (Smart and Sustainable ACMECS), and Thailand-UNFPA Country Programme Document (CPD) 2022-2026. Potential areas include reproductive health, family planning, youth empowerment, and aging society, through various forms of collaboration such as training courses, as well as the sharing of knowledge, experience, and good practices.

On this occasion, the Director-General cordially invited UNFPA to participate and organize activities at the Global South-South Development Expo 2022 (GSSD Expo 2022), co-hosted by Thailand through TICA, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), to be held during 12-14 September 2022 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok.
