On 12 December 2022, Mrs. Ureerat Chareontoh, Director-General of Thailand International Development Agency (TICA), met with Mr. Karim Amer, Director of Partnerships, Department of External Relations and Communications, The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) during the 3rd High-Level Meeting (HLM) of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation (GPEDC) (2022 Effective Development Co-operation Summit) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mr. Amer expressed appreciation for Thailand's support of UNRWA over the years and commended the country's strong role in promoting development cooperation. He informed the Thai side of UNRWA’s mission and assistance programmes for Palestinian refugees in West Bank, Gaza, and other countries such as Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. These programmes range from humanitarian assistance, public health, to education and training focusing on TVET in various skills including mechanical skills, teacher training, nursing, microfinance.
As for Thailand’s international development cooperation, the Director-General emphasized that TICA has implemented various forms of cooperation including development projects, human resource development, training, and capacity building. This includes the triangular cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to build capacity of Palestine in the area of tourism. Furthermore, to foster resilience in the post-COVID-19 pandemic, TICA focuses on four security aspects: food, health. job, energy and environment securities.
Both sides will explore the possibility of development cooperation particularly in the areas of human resource development, capacity building and training in needed skills.
