On 14 August 2024, Mrs. Arunee Hiam, Deputy Director-General of Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), attended the ASEAN + BRICS Roundtables: Global Governance & Sustainable Trade for Food Security at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Republic of Singapore. The event was organized by the Diplomatic Network (Asia) and Pan Pacific Singapore. H.E. Mrs. Ureerat Chareontoh, Ambassador of Thailand to Singapore also attended the opening ceremony. Additionally, the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore and TICA co-organized an exhibition showcasing Thailand’s development cooperation in agriculture and food security, highlighting Thailand’s expertise, experience, and role in South-South Cooperation. The event was attended various sectors in Singapore such as diplomatic corps, business sectors, and media organizations.
During the roundtables, participants exchanged views and explored collaborative possibilities among ASEAN and BRICS member countries on global food security in three key sessions namely (1) Global Strategies for Sustainable Trade and Food Security, which covered the definition of sustainable trade and food security and the importance of these concepts for global economic and social stability, (2) Aligning Sustainable Trade Practices Across ASEAN and BRICS, which provided an opportunity for each country to share experiences in addressing food security challenges, and (3) Future Challenges and South-South Collaboration, which emphasized the importance of South-South Cooperation toward the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and overcoming food security crises in the 21st century.
On this occasion, the Deputy Director-General of TICA delivered remarks during the Roundtable 3 session. The session provided an opportunity to exchange policies and best practices regarding Thailand's food security operations and highlight TICA’s role in sharing Thailand's best practices with other developing countries through South-South and Triangular Cooperation. Additionally, TICA's successful examples of agricultural and food security projects with various development partners, both bilaterally and trilaterally, were shared. The discussion emphasised the importance of applying technology and innovation in the agricultural sector, implementing modern and comprehensive policies, and fostering global cooperation to address 21st-century challenges arising from climate change. In closing, the Deputy Director-General affirmed Thailand’s readiness, through TICA, to support partnerships for development in Southeast Asia and beyond.
