On 16 February 2024, Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) in collaboration with Mahidol University and the Rockefeller Foundation co-hosted the Workshop titled “Advancing Climate Resilient Livelihoods in Thailand” at Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok. On this occasion, Lt. Sorawud Preededilok, Minister attached to TICA, delivered the opening remarks at the Workshop, together with Ms. Deepali Khanna, Vice President of the Asia Regional Office, the Rockefeller Foundation and Associate Professor Dr. Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti of the Mahidol University. The event was successfully attended by over 50 representatives from governments, private sector, international organizations, civil society, and academia.

The objective of the said workshop is to provide a platform for all relevant stakeholders to acquire knowledge on Thailand’s climate change policies and strategies, explore innovative solutions to cope with climate change effectively, as well as to collaborate on building climate resilient communities in Thailand.

In his remarks, the Minister attached to TICA addressed that climate change affects us all, and climate action is urgently needed. He also highlighted that the Royal Thai Government attaches high priority to tackling climate change in compliance with the current 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan (NESDP), i.e. the Milestone 10-Development of a Circular Economy and Low-Carbon society, and the Milestone 11-Reduction of Risks and Impacts of Natural Disaster and Climate Change. Furthermore, Thailand is committed to attaining the long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, and net-zero GHG emissions by 2065.

The Workshop commenced with a lecture in the topic of “Thailand’s Trajectory Towards Net Zero: National Plans and Policies in Tackling Climate Change,” followed by a plenary discussion among representatives from governments, civil society, and international organizations on the topic of  “Community and climate action,” and the breakout sessions in the afternoon in which participants had an opportunity to exchange knowledge on how climate change affects public health, agriculture, environment, and energy as well as to brainstorm solutions to existing problems.

The outcomes of this Workshop will help to guide future efforts aimed at creating sound climate change policies and actions and building climate resilient communities in Thailand.
