Background and Rationale

Climate change (CC) is an important situation of the world and many countries or areas are affected in many problems such as livelihoods, agriculture, disasters, health, economy, natural resources and social community. The ways focused for solve these problem are mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and adaptation to CC. Mitigation of GHGs must mainly use many sections of social structure connecting with economy including, national policy, industrial part and energy part together that is not easily motivate. Adaptation is easy for action, main requirement is community cooperation for solve problems.

The areas which have capacity or readiness for adapt can avoid these problems or resilience to CC but the areas which cannot adapt, they must lose by CC effects. Therefore, the vulnerable areas should be build capacity on climate change adaptation (CCA). The effects are difference depending many conditions of each area so that, human resource of each area must be developed or trained to know and understand in the integrating knowledge or multidisciplinary for risk assessment, identification specific problems and design CCA of areas.

Chulalongkorn University is the oldest and most reputable academic institute of Thailand abounding many academic programs, knowledge institutes, research innovations, human resource, many facilities and both cooperation in domestic and international level. The Center of Excellence for Climate Change Knowledge Management (CCKM) is organized under Faculty of Science, which has mission to collect, synthesize and disseminate knowledge on CC to support strategic planning of government agencies, private sector as well as local community, with aim to strengthen coping capacity to climate risk and CCA and therefore has the capability of giving training courses in an international level.

This is a good opportunity to share and learn about CCA in Thailand. There are many organizations or institutes for training and sharing in knowledge, technology and experiences that can be used in risk management and CCA planning for sustainable development of communities.
