Background and Rational:

Emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals are the diseases that appearing in an animal population for the first time or the disease that existing previously but rapidly increasing in particular geographic locations.  In the past ten years, the tropical emerging and re-emerging diseases are important to both human and animal health, the diseases have significant impacts not only in public health but also in economic losses. For example, the significant impacts of emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals are 1) animal production; the animal diseases cause high morbidity and mortality and effect to human food production and food security 2) public health; some zoonotic animal diseases effect to human health security and have pandemic potential, e.g Avian Influenza, SARS, Nipah, West Nile, etc.

Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University has the activities related to researches and education on animal diseases especially emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals such as Avian Influenza H5N1 and pandemic H1N1 which are considered as emerging zoonotic diseases.  The staffs at the faculty of Veterinary Sciences and the Research Unit in Emerging and Re-emerging Disease in Animals are well recognized at national and international levels.  The staffs have experiences on working and providing knowledge on the disease researches, educations, and policy advocacy.  Training program in Tropical Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases in Animals; Surveillance and Diagnosis will be one of the activities that successfully conducted by the faculty of Veterinary Science, since this implementing agency have expertise staffs, broad facilities, advance equipment and suitable downtown location for the training.

  Field Trips: 4 days field trip (2 days each trip) to emerging disease outbreak areas, local provincial live stock office, diagnostic laboratories.  Participant will learn and practice on disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, diagnosis and prevention and control.
   
Advance Assignments

Country Report:  Each participant require to give a country report presentation related to Tropical Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases in Animals in the country

   
Participant Criteria
  1. Veterinarians or public health professionals.
2.Persons who have experiences in the field of Zoonotic Diseases, Epidemiology and Veterinary Public Health.

3. Accommodation will be organized at the hotel near Chulalongkorn University  
   
Expected Results
  1. The participants will be gained the knowledge on tropical emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals; natural history, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention and control of the diseases
2. The participants will be gained the knowledge to conduct effective disease surveillance, rapid outbreak investigation of emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals.
   
Evaluation
  Participants must attend at least 80% training time to receive certificate.
