Early Childhood Health Care Management
Background and Rational
The period of early six year after birth is important to develop children’s quality of future life. Their growth and development are rapidly progress include physical, cognitive, emotional, social and moral. The progress will be optimized under effective early childhood health care management that required nurses and health personnel with ample background knowledge of child development, management and community collaboration.
Pediatric Nursing Department, Faculty of Nursing Prince of Songkla University with support from the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of the importance of the early childhood health care management and knowledge transferring to developing countries. The training program on the childhood health care management was developed. The knowledge will be strengthening health personnel capability to care and promote early childhood health. The final outcome of providing effective management for early childhood health care will be a better quality of life of young children who will become desirable manpower in each nation in the future, and therefore serve the needs of the governmental sector.

Participants for this course should:
Objectives:
· On completion of this course, the participants will be able to: increase knowledge and experience relating to early childhood health care management;
· gain more skills in early childhood health care management;
· propose a project relating to early childhood health care management for their countries;
· exchange their knowledge and experience, and establish their early childhood health care networks in Asian, African and Pacific Island countries.
Course design:
This is a 4-week training program designed for professional nurses, registered nurses, public health officers, or officers in relevant areas. Classroom lecture and discussion, self reflection and group reflection, individual and group assignments are training activities used to gain basic theoretical knowledge and experience on early childhood growth and development and childhood health care management from facilitation of the instructors. Case studies and project proposals based on field trips observation are used to enhance experiential training.
Course Contents:
1. Lectures
1) Current situation of early childhood health.
2) Concept of early child care management
3) Strategic planning for early child health care
4) Ecological system theory
5) Partnership in early childhood health care system and management
6) Community participation in early childhood health care
7) Family participation in early childhood health care
8) Writing a project proposal
9) Roles of pediatric nurse in early childhood health care
10) Early child growth and development
11) Early childhood health care management in primary setting
12) Child day-care health management
13) Development a project proposal relating to early childhood health care management for each country.
2. Study Trips/ Field trips
Participants are assigned to
· Observe for early childhood health care management in child care centers run by multi sector organization.
· Identify problems and give appropriate suggestions for better management in given localities based on situation analysis.
· Case study report and presentation as a group work.
3. Advance Assignments
· Country Report
All participants are requested to prepare their country report regarding to introduction, general information of the country (e.g., geographical status of the country, climate, population, official language, social, educational and economic conditions, Per-capita income, environmental situation, etc.), historical background of the participant related to the training course, health policy relating to early childhood health care management in their own setting. The report should be presented by slide power point or other audio-visual aids for 10-15 minutes. It should be typed and submitted to the Department of Pediatric Nursing, Faculty of Nursing on the first day of the program.
4. Closing Ceremony
To present their culture, all participants are requested to bring their national costume as well as to show one cultural performance (e.g., national dance, sing a song, etc.) for closing ceremony.
