On 23 March 2023, Mrs. Ureerat Chareontoh, Director-General of Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), welcomed Ms. Pressia Arifin-Cabo, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in Timor-Leste, and Ms. Siriluck Chiengwong, Head of Office, UNFPA Thailand. Also present at the meeting were Ms. Arunee Hiam, Deputy Director-General of TICA, and Ms. Chidchanok Malayawong, Director of Development Promotion and Coordination Division. Both sides took this opportunity to discuss South-South and triangular cooperation between the two agencies and development partners.

The UNFPA Representative in Timor-Leste shared information regarding UNFPA’s operations, opportunities, and challenges in managing projects in Timor-Leste, especially on the issue of insufficient number of doctors, nurses, and trained health workers in the areas of sexual and reproductive health, midwifery, and childbirth. In this connection, UNFPA/Timor-Leste proposed a project to build capacity of health workers in Timor-Leste who have already learnt theories from Cuba, while the practical training could be added through knowledge sharing, experience and best practices exchanging in the aforementioned fields by experts from Thailand. Director-General of TICA suggested triangular cooperation between UNFPA Timor-Leste and Cuba as Thailand and Cuba have had an Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation and mutually share an interest on medical services. The UNFPA invited the Director-General of TICA to visit Timor-Leste in an exploratory mission to assess their real needs.
