On 1 March 2022, Mrs. Ureerat Charoentoh, Director-General of Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Royal Thai Government, handed over the Emergency and Trauma Services and Central Sterile Buildings for Koh Kong Referral Hospital, the Kingdom of Cambodia to Mr. Sreng Hong, Deputy Government of Koh Kong Province, in a ceremony held at Koh Kong Referral Hospital, the Kingdom of Cambodia. The construction and renovation of the Emergency and Trauma Services and Central Sterile Buildings are a part of activities under Thai-Cambodian Development Cooperation Programme in Health Sector between Trat and Koh Kong Provinces. This is a part of the efforts to set up an effective and coherent cross-border patient referral system between the two provinces through the establishment of Twin Hospitals.

Apart from the construction of Emergency and Trauma Services and Central Buildings at Koh Kong Referral Hospital, the Royal Thai Government through TICA also provided support for necessary medial equipment for ER services and infection control (IC) system at the hospital overall worth more than 7 million Baht. In addition to this, with capacity building and knowledge and exchange transfer activities organized by medical personnel from Klong Yai Hospital in Trat Province, Koh Kong and Klong Yai Hospitals as Twin Hospitals has developed a close-knit relationship with constant and regular communication through this border health cooperation initiative. This project is a collaboration between TICA, Trat Provincial Health Office, the Department of Disease Control and the Office of the Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Public Health.

Thailand and Cambodia are of the view that the Emergency and Trauma Services and Central Sterile Buildings of Koh Kong Hospital is a symbol of diplomatic relationship between the two countries. It is also indeed an invaluable effort to establish a systematic and efficient patient referral system between Thai-Cambodian border provinces that is for the benefits for the peoples in border provinces to have access to prompt medical services.
