On 9 February 2022, Mrs. Arunee Hiam, Director of Development Promotion and Coordination Division, Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), attended the first brainstorming session for developing the Trainers curriculum on Liveable and Sustainable Future Cities (LSFC) held in hybrid mode and organised by the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Interior from both central and local authorities, and from the academic sector.
The said brainstorming session aimed to discuss the draft curriculum of the Trainer Programme on LSFC based on the LSFC guideline which attaches importance to enhancing capacity building and empowering local government agencies on regional cities and urban planning.
They also discussed developing clear guidelines to effectively disseminate prerequisite urban planning knowledge to local authorities to be applied in the building of sustainable future cities. The meeting suggested that the guidelines include: (i) systematically sharing knowledge on cities and ecological systems; (ii) the dynamics of changes in cities and other core areas of consideration, consisting of ecological, socio-economical linkages, public administration and governance, public financing and funding sources for LSFC implementation and; (iii) a key performance index (KPI) based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The curriculum on building livable and sustainable future cities is a component of the NESDC’s Livable and Sustainable Future City (LSFC) project. Initiated in 2020, the LSFC project was inspired by and built upon the "Project for Promoting Sustainability in Future Cities of Thailand (TFCP)”, a technical cooperation project undertaken as a collaboration between TICA, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the NESDC. The said project, which was successfully implemented during 2015 – 2021, aimed at transferring knowledge from Japan on future city development and building mechanisms to develop sustainable future smart cities in Thailand.
